Caramel Sauce:
1/2 cup of brown sugar
1/4 cup of water
1 tbsp of unsalted butter
30ml of milk
Hot Chocolate:
400ml of milk
2 tbsp of white flour
2 tsp of unsweetened cocoa powder
1 :: Start with the caramel sauce: pour the sugar and the water in a saucepan and place the latter on a medium heat. Place a lid over the saucepan until the mixture starts boiling, then remove the lid.
2 :: Leave the saucepan on the medium heat until the water starts reducing and the caramel starts becoming golden brown. This can take up to 10 minutes. Don't stir the caramel, but only gently swirl the saucepan to move it around.
3 :: Once the caramel looks ready, remove from heat and add the butter first and mix with a spoon until completely melted, then gradually add and stir in the milk. There you have your caramel sauce!
4 :: As for the actual hot chocolate, start measuring out the milk you need by pouring the amount you want in your mugs, then pour the flour in another saucepan, add a tbsp of milk and combine them together.
5 :: Add the milk you measured in the mugs and then the cocoa powder. Place the saucepan on a low heat and stir until the hot chocolate starts thicken (usually when the milk boils). It can take up to 10 minutes.
6 :: Lastly add the caramel sauce to the hot chocolate and pour the mixture into your mugs. Then serve without sugar (it's already sweet enough) and enjoy!
There you have your homemade caramel hot chocolate! It's so simple and quick yet it makes for a delicious afternoon treat as well as warming drink for your nights in on the couch! I love how the caramel flavour lightly appears and well, chocolate and caramel has always been a winning combination!
